The Palmy Ukulele Band

Based in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire,  The Palmy Uke Band is a group of ukulele players who got together to share the joy of playing ukulele together.  We have developed a unique style of performance which focuses on joyful, singalong music that entertains a broad audience range.  We cover songs from the 60s to the 2000s and beyond, making ambitious choices to entertain our audiences, using creativity and imagination to produce our own versions and styles on familiar classics.  We cover favourites such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and the Monkees and add a wide range of songs which are rarely attempted by many regular cover bands:  for example, Chas 'n Dave, Elvis, Oasis, Pink Floyd, some punk and songs from the broadest range you could imagine, including The Killers, Supertramp, The Who, Blink 182, Elton John .... something to please everyone.

We add to our inimitable style with the use of kazoos, a melodica, mandolin, a penny whistle and a one-(wo)man percussion section.

All About Us

Formed as a very modest gathering of beginner ukulele players who simply wanted to play some tunes.  Over the years, the group has added members, notably our Musical Director/bassist (Steve) who brings years of experience on the professional musical circuit.  He has brought us to the level we are at now:  well rehearsed, well equipped, well disciplined to deliver a fully professional performance that is appreciated by all.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of events do you perform at?

We perform at a variety of public and private events including pub venues, weddings, parties, festivals, and more.   In both the summer and the winter we can play inside or outside (weather dependendent) and particularly love a gig in a pub garden on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon with a wide-ranging audience who get swept along with the sheer joy of PUB on stage.

We have played on the big stage at Peterborough Beer Festival almost every year for the past 10 years (except for the covid years...).  We have regular gigs at a number of local venues including Charters and The Ostrich pub, Peterborough to name just a few...  We regularly attend many local festivals and are particularly busy in the summer months and at Christmas.

Tell me more about the regular Thursday evening 'Open Rehearsal' evenings

PUB rehearse every Thursday at one of a number of pubs in and around Peterborough.  Rehearsals generally begin at 7.30pm and end at 9.30pm.  There are two types of players at rehearsals:  performing band members and 'strummers' who come along for the fun of playing.  There is a broad range of ability in the strummers group.  It's likely you will quickly pick up some playing skills from the others.

You will need to bring your own ukulele.  You can buy a uke for a fairly modest price from amazon or similar. (under £50), or perhaps borrow one from a friend for starters.   Buy yourself a little tuner and bring both to a rehearsal night, we can point you in the right direction from there.

How much do you charge for a public or private performance?

It all depends what you want, and when!  Please call and tell us what you want, we can soon give you a quote.

Can I choose what songs you play for my event?

We have a very extensive repertoire and you will certainly find the sort of songs you would like..  You can choose whatever you like from our song list, but you might like to take advice about what songs work best together and what ones are especially popular.    Our experience with gigs and setlists is extensive, and working together we will certainly put together a lively, imaginative and entertaining set.

How many band members are there? How big does the stage/performing area need to be? Do you use amplification of your sound, and is there any other performance-day requirements?

There are 16 performing band members, but not all come to every gig.  We generally have between 12 and 16 to make up the cohort.

We have a sophisticated sound system that we use for performances.  We use individual vocal and instrumental microphones so we can ensure our sound reaches our audiences.

We need a minimum of 5sqm to accommodate the band members on stage, and we will require access to an energy socket.  We will need a small numer of chairs for the ladies to sit in the front row.
